Internal parasites – a hidden danger that can cause real distress
We cannot see them, but they cause harm nonetheless. Internal parasites most commonly live in our pets’ intestines. As well as the digestive tract, they can also take up residence in other organs – such as the liver or the heart.
Internal parasites – namely roundworms and tapeworms – are the constant companions of dogs and cats.
The most vulnerable and at-risk groups are young animals and pets with weakened immune systems, as well as dogs and cats that live or spend time outdoors.
Owners of pets that only live indoors should also be cautious – it is possible that we might bring the parasite’s eggs home on the soles of our shoes, for example.
Internal parasites are most commonly transmitted through food, but they can also be carried in by external parasites such as ticks and fleas.
Among the most common internal parasites in the Czech Republic are roundworms and tapeworms.
Symptoms of internal parasite infestation
It is not always easy to detect the presence of internal parasites. In some cases, the infection may not be apparent, or it may only become evident at a later stage. In such cases, dogs are particularly dangerous to those around them – as they become carriers.
Most pet owners believe that if their dog’s stools look normal and they haven’t found any parasites in them, everything is fine. However, in most cases, the presence of parasites cannot be detected with the naked eye, as it is usually the larvae and eggs that are found in the stools. It is therefore advisable to have your dog’s or cat’s stools checked regularly under a microscope.
Parasites deprive their hosts of nutrients, which is why weight loss and a deterioration in coat quality are among the signs of an infestation. Vomiting and diarrhoea may also occur. Infected animals may also exhibit ‘sliding’.
In advanced stages, infection with the parasite may manifest as a runny nose and watery eyes, and a cough; however, neurological symptoms such as uncoordinated movements or paralysis of the limbs may also occur.
