Articular cartilage has a limited capacity for regeneration and renewal. During life, cartilage gradually wears down and becomes damaged. The wear of articular cartilage can be slowed and its regeneration improved by supplying the joint with the building blocks of cartilage in the form of joint nutrition.
The basic building blocks of cartilage and joint structures are glucosamine, chondroitin and collagen. Chondroitin sulphate binds water, maintains cartilage elasticity and blocks enzymes that damage cartilage. Glucosamine sulphate stimulates chondrocyte metabolism and slows cartilage degeneration. Type II collagen provides strength and flexibility to cartilage and joint structures. Vitamin C is involved in collagen metabolism and protects cells against oxidative damage.
